Responsible for the Technology group for the Eastern Hemisphere, Mr Tuohy and the majority of his team relocated to the new state of the art manufacturing facility at Newcastle upon Tyne, England. To support the manufacturing facility and product development he added a materials science group and also a testing group to plan and execute small scale, mid-scale and full scale test programmes.
He had significant involvement in the direction of product development. He pioneered the functional design philosophy for deep-water riser design optimisation, which subsequently was adopted in a Technical Co-operation Agreement program with Petrobras for their offshore Brazil (1500 m) deep-water activities. HE has overseen may IRDC (Innovation, Research, Development & Commercialisation) projects in his portfolio.
Responsible for achieving the Lloyds Register Type Approval extension for the Newcastle Manufacturing Plant and increasing the qualification envelope for the design and manufacture of unbonded flexible pipe products to 15-inch Internal Diameter for Wellstream company.
He continued to develop the Technology base to support all activities for the future European Office. This team was to encompass a broad range of skill sets including material specialists, technical analysts (located in Aberdeen, Scotland and Stavanger, Norway), applied technology engineering, and a special testing team for mid scale to full scale test execution. The operating budget with which I had responsibility for was in the order of $2 million.
He represented Wellstream on a number of Joint Industry Programs over this period. New JIPs added to the portolio included;
- Evaluation of Polymers for High Temperature Applications
- Development of Service life prediction models for polymers
