WEGEMT is a European Association of 40 Universities in 17 countries. It was formed in 1978 with the aim of increasing the knowledge base, and updating and extending the skills and competence of practicing engineers and postgraduate students working at an advanced level in marine technology and related sciences. It was established as a “stichting” under Dutch law with its registered office in Delft. At present, the Associates are drawn from universities in Europe, including Scandinavia, the former Eastern Europe and the CIS. They have in common, a capability, expertise and experience to teach and carry out research in marine technology and related sciences.

WEGEMT has long been associated with advanced education and training events which are primarily aimed at practising engineers and postgraduate students. More often than not, the material contained within them touches on topics which are the subject of ongoing research and development or involve putting new methods into practise: they always deliver a comprehensive and detailed examination of the subject being explored.

The 27th School was hosted by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The work involved developing the course programme outlining the timeline from innovation through design, manufacture, qualification testing, installation, in-service monitoring and control. In addition a tour of the manufacturing facilities was facilitated for the international students attending the school.
